 Words of Grace

Hearing the Call and Picking up the Phone

I have recently been reminded that I am connected to something that Einstein would certainly have called “weird” and “at a distance.”  I kept running across reminders of a woman who took the Foundations class with me 7 years ago and liked what we had to say but whose family just wasn’t ready for Sunday service.  I’d seen her a couple of times since then as we went and picked blueberries together and saw a film but really hadn’t seen her in a couple of years.  Lately, she has been coming into my mind with me saying to myself, “I really need to call her,” but until I opened a book and found her card as the bookmarker, I hadn’t actually picked up the phone. It was the third time she had crossed my mind and I don’t ignore things when it gets to the third time.  I called.  After some idle chatter, she asked me why, since I am a minister, I had called. I told her about coming across the card and not being willing to ignore the psychic call again.  She then told me she was really in need of a minister right then.  Well, golly, that kind of co-incidence just can’t be called coincidence. It really is CO-Incidence.  Spirit as her and as me called me to do something and I am trying to listen better to those calls.

A few weeks ago, Elisha and I were visiting and he told me about a new Hebrew phrase he had been given and which he is using to end his prayers.  Last Sunday we had a workshop with Israeli native, Ronit Gabay.  Hebrew is her native language.  Out of the blue (as though I believed in coincidence), Ronit told me that very phrase again.  It means “I create what I speak,” which is certainly what we mean when we say, “And so it is” at the end of our prayers.  So I am now using that phrase to end my prayers as well.  You might want to use it yourself.  Ready?  Here it is: Abracadabra.  No kidding, it really does mean, “I create what I speak.”

My prayer for me and for you for this month is that we retain our balance in this potentially busy season; we speak to each and everyone with whom we come into contact with kindness and respect; that we receive with as much grace as we give; and that we choose to spend a bit of our shopping budget and time giving to the needy instead of spending outrageously just because it’s Christmas.

This year is the beginning of something new in the world.  The birth of the living Christ as each of us as we wake up to who we are, how we act, and the good that is ours to use and share.

Merry holy days everyone!
